The first time, it was a combination of prestige, research interests, and location. The second time, I was just applying to any decent M.S. program in Texas since I would be paying in-state tuition. The last time, it was mostly research interests with some location consideration. Both Ph.D. programs are/were fully-funded, i.e., tuition is/was waived and I will be/was paid a stipend.
